Ray Edwards

Height:  6-6
Weight:  270
Position: Defensive End
College:  Purdue University
Born:  January 1, 1985

After three successful seasons with the Purdue University Boilermakers, Ray was drafted by the  Minnesota Vikings  in the 4th round (127th overall) of the 2006 NFL draft.  The lightning quick defensive end from Cincinnati, Ohio, began showing promise on the football field for Woodward High School in Cincinnati.  He was a defensive end and tight end for the Bulldogs and was a four-year starter.  Ray finished his senior campaign at Woodward by earning first team all-state and league Player of the Year as a linebacker after recording 110 tackles, including 12 sacks, with seven forced fumbles and five pass breakups.  He had 105 tackles and 12 sacks his junior year.  Although Edwards received a great deal of attention for his play on the football field, Ray was also a great basketball player in high school.  He is the all-time leading rebounder in Woodward H.S. history, and the second all-time leading scorer at the school.  When he graduated, Woodward retired his high school basketball number, in honor of his outstanding athletic and academic record.  Ray was recruited by a number of top academic colleges for basketball. Ray was also a top student in the classroom, and  he was the Salutatorian of his high school graduating class (Woodward, 2003).  Ray was President of the National Honor Society chapter at Woodward.  After his stellar senior year, Ray headed to Purdue University to play football for the Boilermakers, where he continued to earn accolades on the field.  He was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team by The Sporting News and broke into the starting lineup his sophomore year.  Edwards' sophomore year, he was named a semifinalist for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award as he racked up 8.0 sacks, 11.0 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.  He ended his collegiate career with two sacks and an interception in the final game of the 2005 season.  After a successful rookie season with the Minnesota Vikings, Ray looks to strengthen the Vikings defensive line even more as he heads into his second season.  Ray was a physical education major at Purdue and he enjoys playing basketball and bowling when not on the football field.  Ray has been a speaker at his former elementary school, stressing the importance of education, and advising the students that the teachers really are there to help them.
